Bahrain.bh has got a new toy..a blog!
The Bahrain E-Government Portal have launched a new service to their catalogue..
a blog.
The first post (posted 12/07/09) was written by the Minister of Cabinet Affairs Shaikh Ahmed bin Atiya Allah and it goes like this:
You were once and still are a source of inspiration and progress to all the projects we establish, and through this blog we will communicate directly and listen to your suggestions, concerns and opinions. We welcome all your comments that will help us live better and raises our beloved country high.
You are welcome to post comments from now till July 15th where I will reply and answer your questions for a full hour from 11am.
Wonderful.
So will this blog be up for only three days and the ‘do we use blogs’ tick box be ticked ?
The idea of a blog is that it stays maintained, i.e. relevant posts are updated on the blog and the connection between the blogger and readers continues. It doesn’t really need to be the Minister him/herself but anyone working within the Ministry.
The comments on the blog are to say the least are eccentric.
There is a thumbs up/thumbs down feature yet all comments are anonymous by force, meaning that the comment form doesn’t even have a name field to be filled in!
The funny thing is that some of the comments posted already which criticize the e-Govt. are given thumbs down and others praising are getting thumbs up, but also receiving as many thumbs down so a thumbs up/thumbs down war is bubbling as we speak.
I just hope they really utilize this blog properly and get people to comment by name..at least give them the choice to anonymous!
I just received this from a Bahraini blogger nicknamed ‘Al-Kaseef’ who runs a number of blogs one of which is ‘School Scribbles’ , an extremely funny blog about life in the classroom and the shenanigans he and his friends experienced. What made his blog even more funny was his witty way of using slang and blatant swear words (something you rarely ever see in an Arabic blog). This blog and several others he runs are (or were) hosted on Jeeran.
Jeeran have recently removed/deleted his blog with no apparent reason without prior notice and the administration of Jeeran have been beating around the bush and avoiding giving the ‘real’ reason why his blog was removed. Keeping in mind that his blog was never political, racist, sectarian or extremely offensive. Yes, the language was dirty but any sane reader would not get offended by it.
It seems that Bahraini bloggers are becoming more and more a nuisance that needs getting rid of! First it’s the Bahrain government and now Blog hosts are testing the waters of censoring the blogs that they host!
Below is the letter he sent to us explaining the situation and thanking all he people who made his scribbles worthwhile…
Freedom of Speech..Ha!
News has been filtering down that the latest websites that have been blocked by the Bahrain Government are none other than bahrainblogs.org one of Bahrain’s first Aggregators and still one of the most popular, and another website being blocked is Just Bahraini of the famous anti-sectarian campaign of the same name spearheaded by the ‘Blogfather’ Mahmood Al-Yousif.
Both these websites should by no reason whatsoever to be blocked as they do not contain any material that is against the law, with the latter an amazing campaign against sectarianism which every good Bahraini wants to rid this country of, and thus go forward..
As a temporary solution, please use a RSS feeder such as Google Reader or whatever you can search through google, just type ‘RSS reader’ and pick whatever you like and paste this link into the add subscription thingie http://bahrainblogs.org/feed/
Also please fill in the block reporting form (sorry I don’t know the link) which you can go to by clicking on the block message
